Chandra Grahan 2023 in India: Skygazers excitedly wait for year's first Lunar Eclipse

After the rare hybrid solar eclipse on April 20, it's time for the first lunar eclipse of the year.

On Friday, May 5, 2023, the penumbral lunar eclipse will begin at around 8:44 PM IST and end at 1:01 AM on May 6. The maximum lunar eclipse will occur on May 5 at 10:52 p.m. According to report, lunar eclipses are visible from anywhere on the night side of Earth if the sky is clear.

Some locations will see the entire eclipse, while others will see the Moon rise or set during the eclipse. However, sky watchers must be aware that since the May 5th eclipse is a penumbra, one must have sharp eyesight and pay close attention to deciphering the eclipse. According to NASA, a penumbral eclipse occurs when the Moon passes through Earth's penumbra, or the faint outer part of its shadow.

The moon will darken so slightly that it may be difficult to notice. So if you don't know a penumbral eclipse is happening, you can miss it. Regions that will witness at least some parts of the penumbral eclipse on May 5 include Asia, Australia, Africa, the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Antarctica and most of Europe.
